General information

THE IDAHO FOREST IS BIG!!

Nov 10th

Well of course the day we went out on a fieldtrip to study our trees and forests, it was cold and slushy snow. We had a great day anyway.
Excursion to find a tree
Excursion to learn about our forest. Notice the Fall colours.

There are 52.7 million acres of land within Idaho's borders and 41% of it is covered by forests. That's 21.8 million acres which is larger than the states of New Hampshire, Connecticut, Vermont and Massachusetts combined!

Two-thirds of those forest are classified as "Timberlands" where timber harvest is allowed.

Appearance

Our forest is made up of Lodgepole Pine, Douglas-Fir, Grand Fir, Western Hemlock, Ponderosa Pine, Western Redcedar, Western Larch, and Western White Pine.

Seasonal Changes

Life in this forest

We look out our windows and see deer and elk. There's moose out there but we don't see them as often. Bald eagles live along our rivers and lakes. Osprey are also here. We have great fishing! Beautiful white swans migrate through here each spring.

Importance of this forest

Future of this forest

We live in a logging town and it is our wish that this resource will continue to support our community without clear cutting or waste. We hope that our forests are cared for as they make our area special for the wildlife it supports and the beauty that abounds.

In July, Laurie Martin and her husband, Ace, spent a day in our school(Elanora Heights Primary School, Sydney, Australia) and showed various classes pictures of St Maries and other parts of Idaho.

After school resumed in Idaho, Laurie's class have been preparing a report on their Western White Pine for our Trees and Forests Project in addition to this forest report and they have sent a picture of Fall colours near their school that appears at the top of this page.
